Soccer Got Canceled. Street Fighter Won.

A canceled soccer game turned into an opening-day trip to Street Fighter with my youngest. Cheesy in the right way, a great soundtrack, and a whole lot of fun.

Street Fighter-inspired marker cartoon of the Guy in the Hat and his youngest son striking playful arcade fighter poses, with Dad and Son health bars, blue energy effects, and the caption Movie night wins! Soccer got canceled.

I took my youngest to see the new Street Fighter on opening day.

Were we there because we're huge fans?

No.

Because he'd been asking me all week?

Also no.

Because soccer got canceled, we suddenly had some free time, and he knows his dad loves going to the movies?

Yep. That one.

And honestly? We had a blast.

The movie was cheesy in exactly the right way. The animated cutaways were fantastic. The fight scenes were very cool. And the acting was sometimes bad in that wonderfully ridiculous way that somehow worked with everything around it.

Then there's the soundtrack. As a man in his late 40s, I felt like somebody had picked that specifically for me.

For anyone who hasn't been following it, this is the new live-action take on Capcom's fighting game series, directed by Kitao Sakurai. Andrew Koji plays Ryu, Noah Centineo plays Ken, Jason Momoa is Blanka, and Cody Rhodes is Guile.

That should give you some idea of what you're walking into.

Some of the reviews have been rough. I can only tell you how it landed with the two of us: we had a great time.

A canceled soccer game turned into a movie outing with my youngest, and we both walked out hoping they make more.

I'll take that.

Sometimes the unexpected plans are the ones that work out best.
