Pokémon GO Is Family Time in Disguise

Hunting, battling, and raiding together has made Pokémon GO a family activity we love. Its AR features are a reminder of what technology can add to everyday life.

The Guy in the Hat, wearing his red flat cap and black hoodie with his distinctive red goatee, uses an iPhone to catch Pikachu in augmented reality. An enlarged phone view shows Pikachu on a park path with a catching circle and Poké Ball.

My family plays Pokémon GO together. We head out, hunt for Pokémon, battle, and team up for raids. We have so much fun doing it.

Apparently, hunting virtual creatures is a pretty good reason to get the whole family out of the house.

And yes, the tech side of me loves the AR integration. There’s something fun about seeing a Pokémon appear in the world around you. Add in exploring together and working toward a shared goal, and that little screen becomes part of a much bigger experience.

Pokémon GO celebrated its 10th anniversary this July. The Pokémon Trading Card Game turns 30 this October, counting from its original release in Japan in 1996.

That’s a lot of years of catching, collecting, and battling. And it’s still giving our family something to do together.

I talk a lot about AR and what technology can do for work and learning. This is one of my favorite examples of what it can do for everyday life.

It gives us a reason to go somewhere, a challenge to tackle together, and something we all enjoy.

Sometimes the value of technology is that simple. We’re outside. We’re on the same team. We’re having fun.

That’s a pretty good use of technology in my book.
