Coffee Tastes Like Dirt Water. There, I Said It.

I understand caffeine, but the love of coffee still makes no sense to me. These days, it's fewer energy drinks, more walking, and an occasional Ghost when the morning starts a little too early.

Aaron in a red flat cap and black hoodie holds a purple energy drink while waving off a coffee mug. The hand-drawn text reads "Coffee? I'll pass." and "What keeps you going?"

I'm going to say something a lot of people don't want to hear.

I don't like coffee.

I don't think it tastes good. I don't understand why everybody loves it. To me, it tastes like dirt water. And I know some of you are already preparing to tell me I just haven't had the right coffee yet.

I understand the caffeine. That part makes perfect sense. If there's no other option and I need some, I'll absolutely have a cup. But the love of coffee? That will probably never make sense to me.

For a long time, Red Bull was my thing. I'd have at least one a day. Eventually, that turned into five or six a day, and I knew I needed to pull that back.

These days, I limit myself to three or four energy drinks a week. Over the last year or so, I've mostly switched to Ghost.

Why? The flavors are more childish, and apparently that works for me. Welch's Grape. Creamsicle. I like my caffeine to taste like something I actually want to drink.

I usually find them for around $2 to $2.50, and I really like the taste. That's about as complicated as my selection process gets.

The other thing that's helped quite a bit is walking and getting more exercise. I've noticed I don't reach for an energy drink as often when I'm moving more.

But some mornings, I'm still looking for a little help.

Today, I woke up at 3:30 and started working. By about 7:00, I was thinking, "Okay, I've still got a full day ahead of me."

So I grabbed a raspberry cream Ghost. Quite delicious. And it's been helping me through the morning.

What do you reach for when you're dragging?

Coffee? Green tea? An energy drink? Or is getting outside for a walk what helps you most?

I'm curious what you like and what works for you. Just know that if your answer is coffee, I respect your choice... I just don't understand it.
