Being Part of the Business Community

An afternoon of sporting clays with the Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce, and why showing up means listening, enjoying time with coworkers, and helping other businesses.

Whiteboard-style illustration of Aaron in his red flat cap talking with two business attendees at a sporting clays outing, above community and connection sketches. The headline reads: Show up. Listen. Help.

Today we spent the afternoon at the Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce sporting clays event at Wild Wings Sportsman's Club.

I think events like this matter.

You get out of the office. You spend time with the people you work with doing something fun. And you get to know the people behind businesses in the community where you live and work.

Yes, it's an opportunity to tell people about what we do at Subatomic. But it's also a chance to listen.

What does their business do? What are they working on? Where could they use some help?

Sometimes what they need lines up with what we do. Sometimes it has absolutely nothing to do with us.

That's okay.

Maybe we know somebody who can help. Maybe we can make an introduction or point them toward another local business. That connection still matters, even if it never turns into work for our company.

It's easy to get wrapped up in your own business, your own goals, and everything on your own to-do list. These events give you a reason to step outside of that and learn what's happening around you.

And I like getting to spend time with coworkers outside of meetings and the usual workday. Having some fun together matters, too.

Being part of a business community means caring about other people's businesses as well.

Thanks to the Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce and Wild Wings for bringing everyone together today.
