Apparently, I’m More of a Music Person Than I Thought

I thought I wasn’t much of a music person. A family night playing Hitster, a lot of familiar songs, and two boys who ended up tied made me reconsider.

Whiteboard-style illustration of Aaron in his red flat cap enjoying Hitster at a family game table, with musical notes rising from a phone and the headline “Apparently, I’m a music person.”

I usually tell people I’m not really a music person.

Then we played Hitster.

Apparently, I need to rethink that answer.

I love quick games we can all play together. Word games, silly card games, anything that gets the family around the table without needing an entire afternoon to finish. Cards Against Humanity: Family Edition and Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza are already part of the mix.

Last night, we added a new one.

My wife had been talking about Hitster for a while, and we finally sat down to play it. You listen to songs and try to work out when they came out.

Here’s what surprised me: I recognized probably 90% of what we heard, or at least had a pretty good idea of what I was listening to.

For someone who claims he isn’t into music, that’s a lot of familiar songs.

But the best part was watching the kids play. My two boys ended up tied. They didn’t have years of listening to these songs behind them, but they could still listen, make a guess, and get into the game.

That’s what I want from a family game. Something everyone at our table can enjoy, even when we bring completely different experiences to it.

And apparently, hearing a song before your kids were born does not guarantee you’ll do better than they will.

I’d absolutely recommend giving Hitster a try. It worked really well for our family, and we’re already talking about looking at the other editions. I think this is going to be our thing for a little while.

It also made me wonder how much music I’ve picked up over the years without giving it much thought. I might not describe myself as a music person, but clearly some of it stuck.

What’s your go-to family game? Something simple, fun, and easy to get everyone into.

What should we play next?
